An All-American aspiration

From boyhood through the Majors, Matt Walbeck’s and Glen Gross' lives were consumed with baseball. Matt spent over 25 years in professional baseball including 11 years as a Major League catcher and time as a Minor League manager and a Major League coach. Glen has managed youth baseball and competitive youth baseball teams for over a decade.

In 2012, the duo launched Walbeck Baseball Academy which helps over 200 aspiring baseball players from beginners to college athletes, with a range of programs from private instruction to group training. Walbeck Baseball Academy's 11 instructors and managers operate two indoor locations and a number of outdoor locations.

Always on the road

With so many locations, instructors, and clients to manage, Matt and Glen knew their growing Academy needed a platform that let them run smoothly, efficiently, and from anywhere. Not only that but they wanted the staff, the athletes and their parents to have a simple and intuitive way to easily manage schedules anywhere from the car to the field.

Matt and Glen explored a number of options and Front Desk hit a homerun with every requirement. Matt said, “The platform reminded us of Facebook—clean and modern. We know that our players and their parents can open up our Front Desk app and know exactly how to update their profile, sign up for trainings, and make payments.” Along with the mobile capabilities, it was an easy win for the pair to move their business to Front Desk.

All-star business

Unlike many other solutions, Front Desk gives Walbeck Baseball Academy the ability to customize their Front Desk website to their business—logo, colors, pictures, offerings, locations, and staff. “It just looked much more like 'us' than anything else,” notes Glen.

Front Desk also came at a good time for Walbeck, as the partners were shifting from a private-lessons business model to a membership-based model. Matt notes, “We tried other software solutions in the past, and I'm confident that no other provider could have supported our new business model.” Changing business models while implementing a new client management platform is quite the task, but Matt continued on saying, “Not only does Front Desk let us take our business with us wherever we go, it’s made it possible for us to manage multiple locations on a single schedule and to switch to a membership-based model without missing a beat.”

Matt and Glen said that one of the most important things to making a smooth shift was the responsive and helpful Customer Success team, “We were able to get answers to our questions and resolution to our issues very quickly.”

Another benefit of Front Desk for duo is the ability to get work done quickly—and from anywhere! Being a business owner means you might need to take a business call on stands in the middle of a baseball game or on the drive home. “The app looks great and seems to get better every day. I’m not afraid to jump into it, play around with things, and even pull off the road in my car when I get a call from a parent. Doing this with other client management software felt like pure drudgery.” The flexibility and efficiency that the ability to work on iPads and iPhones is vital to Walbeck Baseball Academy.

Glen told us that team schedules is one of his favorite features—not just for him, but also his instructors and clients. The Walbeck staff members are enthusiastic about Front Desk. “Our instructors really like the service," Glen says. "It lets them keep up-to-date on their upcoming lessons.” Matt and Glen don’t take this enthusiasm lightly! “For us, this means fewer phone calls with questions on scheduling outside of business hours. It has taken a lot of pressure off of me personally, as our staff has access to the information they need from their phones. This makes the entire scheduling process incredibly smooth.”
